• What is a category?
  A category within Yahoo's directory is just a subject heading. For example, Entertainment is a category as Music is a sub-category within the Entertainment category. And, hence, 'Entertainment/Music/Artists' would be the category to place a site about the Beatles.

• What is a VALID category for submitting an add request?
  A completely valid Yahoo category is a full path from the top of the Yahoo directory. For example, Entertainment/Music/Artists would be the proper category for a new page about the Beatles. If you get an error that the category you've tried to add to is "a meta level category" or is "not a valid Yahoo category," please refer to our list of reserved categories for more detailed information.

  Yes, please put your suggestions for additional categories in the "Additional Categories" box. However, be aware that we try to limit the number of links to the same site, and as with your title and comments, we reserve final editorial license as to the placement(s) of your site.

  First of all, please do a search to see if the site is already in our database. If you do not find it, then go ahead and add it!

  Yes, the address of the homepage (the Uniform Resource Locator) is the only way for us to give you a link on Yahoo.

  No, it costs absolutely nothing for you to add to Yahoo, just a little bit of your time and effort.

  Title - This is the name that will appear in Yahoo.

  URL - Usually starts with http://.

  If you do not know what a URL is, please read the WWW Frequently Asked Questions Page, which explains all the terminology and even how to write your own home page in the HyperText Markup Language (HTML).

  Categories - Where it will appear in Yahoo.

  Comment - It should be about a line or two. It should describe what is on the page.

• Can I add keywords?
  The Yahoo search works by searching for 'keywords' contained in the URL, the name (title) of the listing, and the comment field. In the add form, the comments provided by you are used as a description of the site. We try to keep comments to about a sentence or two.

• Can I create new categories?
  If you think there should be a new category for your page, go to the page where you think a new category should be added and click on Add. Put your suggestion for a new category in the "Additional Categories" box.

• How long do you keep links?
  Forever! or until the link itself is discontinued.

  Please read this entire instruction sheet before attempting to add your site

  Important notes:

  • Keep in mind that you cannot add your site to the top level or any "reserved" categories. Please consult our list of reserved categories for further explanation.

  • Any business must be placed in a Business and Economy category.

  • In the interest of fairness, listings under the Companies and Products and Services categories will be listed in alphabetical order by the company or product name.

  • Please confine all business additions to TWO categories. Pick the categories that are the most valid choices. All others will be ignored.

  • Personal Home pages must go in the Entertainment/People category.

  • If your site is regionally specific, please add it to the respective Regional information category.

  • Comments should be kept to 15-20 words.

  • There is no charge for listing your site.

  Instructions for adding your site:

  1. Start by browsing the Yahoo database and find the category where you would like your listing to appear. If you cannot find an appropriate category, please use the search engine to find a category with comparable information and try adding to that category. If you believe that your site demands a new category, submit the site to the closest related category and be sure to fill in your proposed new category in the Additional Categories field. We will review the site and your new category proposal, but keep in mind that we will place you where we think would be the most beneficial to Yahoo users.

  2. Once you've selected the category to submit to, click on the Add URL link at the top of the page for that category. This will bring up the preformatted submission form. The category information should already be filled in for you in the category box. Please do not type in the category. Leave the category listed in the category box as shown.

  3. Fill out the rest of the form. Make sure to fill in ALL of the fields for completeness.

  4. Make sure that the Comments field consists of information about the site you are adding. This comment will be attached to your link on Yahoo and will be viewable by Yahoo users. Please keep comments to one or two lines (15-20 words).

  5. Additional categories are allowed, but the entry might not be added to all requested categories (see above note concerning businesses). We try to limit each site to two or three categories. Again, entries mignt not be added to all requested categories.

  6. If all goes well, you should receive confirmation of your submission.
