If you had to look at the cast of the instant classic Jersey Girl and guess which cast-member had political aspirations, you’d guess Ben Affleck. We all would. But here’s Will Smith with a surprise.

“I’m elevating my ability to be useful in the world,” Smith said during an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. “I think that that’s what my grandmother always hoped, that I would make myself useful to people in this lifetime. I’m working really hard and my storytelling is elevating, my ability to be eloquent with my body and with my voice and to deliver ideas as an actor is elevating. And, you know, as I look at the political landscape, I think that there might be a future out there for me.”

Smith also describes himself as “a climber” which is pretty clear given that he’s gone from being the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to a two-time (perhaps soon-to-be three) Academy Award nominee.

“This is the first year that I’ve been incensed to a level that I can’t sleep, you know?” Smith continues. “So I’m feeling that at some point, in the near future, I will have to lend my voice to the conversation in a somewhat different way.”

And before you start to naysay Will Smith’s potential political career, keep one thing in mind: First Lady Jada Pinkett Smith.
