Jennifer Lawrence Says Hollywood Needs to ‘Make a New Normal-Body Type’ — ‘At Least So I Don’t Feel Like the Fattest One’

Jennifer Lawrence has been praised for not conforming to traditional, impossibly thin standards of beauty since she stepped into the spotlight – but, she says, this praise is misplaced. “I would like us to make a new normal-body type,” she says in Harper’s Bazaar’s May issue. “Everybody says, ‘We love that there is somebody with a normal body!’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t feel like I have a normal body.’ ”

The actress explains: “I do Pilates every day. I eat, but I work out a lot more than a normal person. I think we’ve gotten so used to underweight that when you are a normal weight it’s like, ‘Oh, my God, she’s curvy.’ Which is crazy.

“The bare minimum, just for me, would be to up the ante,” she says. “At least so I don’t feel like the fattest one.”

Lawrence, 25, also talks about how she handled the aftermath of the essay she wrote in late 2015 for Lenny demanding equal pay for women in Hollywood and elsewhere.

“I had no idea it was going to blow up like that. And I obviously only absorbed the negative. I didn’t pay attention to the positive feedback,” she says. “My parents get really upset. They do not like me speaking about anything political because it’s hard to see your kid take criticism.”

She continues, “But, really, people who criticized it are people who think women should not be paid the same as men. So I don’t really care what those people think.”

In fighting for equal pay, the X-Men: Apocalypse star has fully embraced the “feminist” label.

“I don’t know why that word is so scary to people; it shouldn’t be, because it just means equality,” she says. “If we are moving forward in a society, you are feeling stronger as a woman, and you want to be taken more seriously. You don’t have to take away the wonderful traits that come with being a woman: We are sensitive. We are pleasers. We’re empathetic.”

And although the actress has earned the admiration of many, she is critical of herself over one particular thing.

“It’s hard to get me out, and when I do go out I don’t really stay out late. If I do stay out late and I’m partying hard, I will throw up,” she says, adding, “Ask Emma Stone. It was the night we saw Adele in L.A. She just started rubbing my back. She was really sweet. I was like, ‘Get out of here. It’s so gross!’ ”
