DENVER - Barack Obama launched his historic fall campaign for the White House on Thursday with an outdoor Democratic National Convention extravaganza that blended old-fashioned speechmaking, Hollywood-quality stagecraft and innovative, Internet age politics.

Should Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain win, he would be 72 when he takes the oath of office, the oldest first-term president in U.S. history. He has survived three bouts of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, and acknowledges his choice of a vice presidential running mate will be of 'enhanced importance.' Last night and earlier today it looked like Sen. John McCain had settled on a running mate, with word leaking to Politico that the veep-to-be would get the call from McCain today. Then McCain decided to make things complicated.

Tourists, residents flee as Gustav swamps Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Residents, tourists and oil workers fled as Gustav swamped Jamaica on Thursday, leaving 59 people dead in its wake. Louisiana and Texas put their national guards on standby, and New Orleans said a mandatory evacuation might be necessary.
